Lead and Mold Information
New EPA Rules Impact Remodeling in Pre-1978 Homes:
April 22, 2010 marked the first day of enforcement of landmark legislation known as the EPA Renovation, Repair, and Painting Rule (RRP). The EPA RRP states that any contractor performing remodeling work in a home built prior to 1978 must receive training and be certified in lead containment practices. DesignTech is always at the forefront of education for new rules and regulations that impact the construction industry. DesignTech is a EPA Certified Lead Safe Renovator, which means we have completed necessary training to safely complete remodeling projects in homes where lead-based coatings have been found. The National Association of Homebuilders’ website provides additional information for consumers about the RRP.
How Mold Can Impact Your Florida Home:
In Southwest Florida, we have an ideal environment (warm and humid) for breeding mold in our homes. In fact, it is often during the course of a remodeling job that mold infestations are first discovered. In many cases, homeowners have no idea their home had a mold problem and are surprised to see the extent to which mold can infiltrate porous surfaces including drywall and carpet underlayment or padding. At DesignTech, we have significant experience repairing mold damage, and can recommend several highly qualified professional mold remediation companies who can address removal of effected materials if necessary.
Since we often cannot see or smell mold in our homes until the infestation is advanced, check your home for water leaks frequently, keep the humidity in your home below 60%, and never turn off your air conditioning system when you leave your Florida home for the winter. If any members of your family suffer from asthma, allergies, or other breathing problems, be especially vigilant about mold issues. Mold can be a strong irritant to airways and a significant trigger of asthma and allergy symptoms. If you suspect you have a mold problem, call DesignTech for a consultation. We can assist in locating the source of a mold problem – such as a slow water leak, window breach or foundation compromise and will help you make a plan for mold remediation and repair. Most importantly, we will address the source of mold-causing moisture so that the problem will not reoccur.
