RMC GOES GREEN – RECYCLE/REUSE/REDESIGN/REMODEL!
by Kathy Guyitt, CAPS
2008 CBIA Remodelers Council Chair
My first week on the job included attending the Commercial Builder’s Council meeting with Jennifer Languell of Trifecta Construction, and a trip to Orlando for the Planning Retreat of the FHBA-Remodelors. The same week we had the first of our Off-Site dinner at West Coast Plumbing which got us off to an exciting and educational new year. With many product reps on site, and many products to showcase, we were introduced to just a few of the latest and greatest innovations in plumbing technology and design. The common thread of all these events: Green!
Here are a few tips for going Green:
- Install On-demand Hot Water Circulation Pump – sends hot water to fixtures in seconds eliminating the need for recirculating or continuous pumping.
- Install Automated Home Leak Monitoring Techniques – One-tenth of household water is lost through leaks from toilet valves, dripping faucets and aging pipes. Toilets can waste up to 750 gallons a month. Moreover, leaks can contribute to moisture build-up and mold.
- Install Low-Flush Toilets – ask about dual flush systems.
- Install High-performance Showerheads – Showers account for 18% of indoor water use and 37% of a home’s hot water use. High-performance showerheads use up to 60% less than a traditional showerhead and will pay for itself quickly.
- Install Faucet Flow Reducers – these fit right into the aerator and reduce up to 40%.
- Investigate your options for water filtration – call your water supplier to see what type of filtration system is best for your supply. Filtration systems include carbon filter, ceramic filter, distillers, copper/zinc alloy systems, reverse osmosis and ultraviolet light purifiers.
Just these few tips alone generate a lot of questions. Remember to check with our fellow RMC and CBIA members for their assistance in researching your Green goals.
